About the Breed

The History of the Shetland Sheepdog

The Shetland Sheepdog, affectionately known as the "Sheltie," is a small but intelligent herding breed hailing from the remote Shetland Islands of Scotland, these small rugged islands are known for their harsh climates which shaped the development of the breed.

Originally bred to herd sheep, they were valued for their agility, intelligence, and adaptability. Their smaller size compared to other herding breeds made them well-suited to the island's tight pastures and scarce grazing land.

Descended from working collies the Shetland Sheepdog was officially recognised as a distinct breed in the early 20th century.

What type of home suits a sheltie?

Shetland Sheepdogs are one of the smallest members of the working dog group. They are very versitile little dogs and can adapt to many different homes so long as their physical and mental needs are met. Whether as a sports dog, family pet, or hiking buddy, they integrate well.

Prospective owners should understand that Shelties need consistent exercise and mental stimulation, regardless of their living situation, they are not a backyard dog and love to be involved with day to day life.

What Is a Breed Standard and Why Is It Important?

A breed standard is a comprehensive guide established at the time of a breeds recognition that defines the ideal characteristics, appearance, and temperament of a specific breed.

These standards include details such as size, coat type, colour, proportion, movement, and even behaviour traits for each breed.

The purpose of a breed standard is to ensure consistency and uniformity within a breed while maintaining its unique qualities and heritage. This benchmark is crucial for breeders, as it serves as a reference point when selecting dogs for breeding to improve or maintain the breed's quality.

Ultimately, these standards play an important role in preserving the integrity and health of a breed. If we don't follow the breed standard, we lose the traits that make Shetland Sheepdogs, Shetland Sheepdogs.
